The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) is heartfelt to announce that this morning it had to euthanize a cheetah that was reported by the Matsulu C community on the 17th of September 2023 at around 21:30.
The entity received a complaint from the community and immediately dispatched a team to conduct an investigation. The team returned this morning at around 05:00am after it assessed the situation and was left with no choice but to euthanize it instantly as it was posing a life threat to the community. The MTPA trained Field Rangers from Mthethomusha Nature Reserve urgently reacted and controlled the situation as it was not possible to dart the animal which was in between the houses.
The carcass has been transported to MTPA Head office, Mataffin today, 18 September 2023 for proper handling.
“We want to commend the community of Matsulu for swiftly reporting to the MTPA when they noticed the cheetah. We would like to encourage the communities to report to MTPA when they notice wild animals and they should not try to take matters into their own hands.” - MTPA CEO Mr. Mduduzi Vilakazi
