MTPA URGES THE PUBLIC TO BE VIGILANT AS HOT WEATHER INCREASES SNAKE ACTIVITY

,

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) urges residents to exercise caution as rising temperatures create favourable conditions for increased snake activity. As temperatures rise during the spring and summer months, snakes become more active and may be encountered in residential areas, gardens, and other outdoor spaces.

The MTPA encourages members of the public to observe the following safety precautions:

  • Avoid approaching, provoking or attempting to kill snakes.
  • Keep yards clean and remove piles of rubbish and other materials that may provide shelter for snakes.
  • Exercise caution when walking through tall grass or outdoor areas.
  • Contact trained snake handlers or relevant authorities when encountering a snake.
  • In the event of a snakebite, seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to cut the wound, suck out venom or apply a tourniquet.
The MTPA further reminds the public that snakes play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and should be treated with caution and respect. The safety of our communities, and wildlife remains our priority.
