The Mpumalanga Tourism & Parks Agency (MTPA) hosted the annual Memorial Lectures in honor of the struggle stalwarts like Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme, Saul Mkhize, Mahatma Gandhi and Richard Gert Sibande in Carolina and Ermelo from 22 – 23 June 2022.

The Acting CEO of the MTPA, Mr Mduduzi Vilakazi explained that the purpose of the Memorial Lectures was to afford us an opportunity to honor all those who were involved in achieving freedom for the people of South Africa. The Gert Sibande District highlights the key freedom fighters who fought against racial segregation as well as the destinations that featured prominently during the liberation struggle.

Following the development of the Gert Sibande Liberation Heritage route, the MTPA embarked on various awareness campaigns aimed at highlighting the rich history and heritage found in this region as well as the variety of tourism offerings. The Liberation Heritage Route further seeks to map out, document and preserve Mpumalanga’s tourism routes.

“Over the years we have compiled a detailed content highlighting each town and the various offerings in each place. This document provides a detailed information about the route, accommodation, attractions, maps and cities. The information is aims to assist one in planning their trip when visiting the attractions on these routes. Information is available on our website, www.mpumalanga.com”, added Vilakazi.

“We are excited to have hosted these memorial lectures as they afforded us an opportunity to take a journey of discovery in the rich history and heritage that forms part of the liberation struggle in Mpumalanga”, concluded Vilakazi.
