Even from a distance the huge metal cross that rises from the ground is impossible to miss, especially with its cartoon guardian holding ever-changing scripture. The cross surrounded by a ring of red shade-netting that provides shelter from the elements, has become something of a local landmark as you enter Middelburg from the N4.
As you get closer you will notice the collection of stones gathered around the base of the cross. Each stone conveying a message, some written others said in prayer, each placed as a statement of devotion.
The Middelburg Prayer Oven is the brainchild of Pastor Hansie Henning and is believed to be the first in South Africa. The idea is to bring ‘prayer to the people’ and is the next stage of the Pastor’s dream, which started with the erection of over 1,700 prayer tents in eleven countries across Africa. The dream is to achieve change through prayer, with the Prayer Oven providing a central point where people can congregate.
The choice of an ‘oven’ is supposed to be symbolic of the Holy Spirit being a flame and represents the intensity of faith required to bring about change. While it is hard to judge the intensity of change this prayer oven has brought. The ever growing pile of stones and messages from people from all over the country and even further afield would suggest it is bringing people together in prayer.
It is also providing a vital community service. As several times a week feeding stations are set up at the Prayer Oven to help those unable to help themselves. This act of human compassion, kindness and appreciation is humbling to watch and touching to be part of.
There is a sense of tranquillity when you step into the ring of shade netting around the Prayer Oven that is difficult to describe. It transcends the hubbub from the nearby major access road and gives a deep aura of peace. It is almost as if the sights and sounds of modern day life slowly seep away to allow for deep thought and reflection.
While the Middelburg Prayer Oven was never intended to be a tourist attraction, it is becoming a focal point in the town and is definitely worth a visit! Whether you are looking for divine inspiration or just a moment away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life it is a place of sanctuary.
