A Brief Overview

Lydenburg is situated on the Sterspruit and the Drops River tributary of the Olifants River, which is at the base of the Long Tom Pass. The name Lydenburg comes from the Dutch meaning “Town of Suffering” The town has become the centre of the South African Fly Fishing industry and it is also an agricultural and mining centre. In June 2006, Lydenburg was renamed to Mashishing, which means “Long green grass”. The name has however not caught on as the boards all still say Lydenburg.
