Our international cultural icon – Dr Esther Mahlangu


Mpumalanga’s very own hero, Dr. Esther Mahlangu is a National Treasure, dedicating her entire life to sharing her Ndebele tradition, culture and heritage with the world through her gorgeous geometric and symmetrical abstract paintings and murals. She has had the honour of being featured in some of the world’s most respected museums, selling her artwork for as much as $30 000.00!

In recent years Dr. Mahlangu spends most of her time on community projects in her home province of Mpumalanga, teaching girls and boys how to paint and do beadwork, ensuring the continued legacy of her Ndebele heritage.

The Internationally respected and recognised Ndebele artist, won the arts and culture veteran award at the Ubuntu award ceremony held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in 2017. She was nominated in the same category as Johnny Clegg for the award, with Dr. Esther Mahlangu receiving over a thousand votes to take home the award!

Most well known for her bold large-scale Ndebele inspired artworks, in 1989 Dr. Mahlangu was invited to create murals for the international exhibition, the Magiciens de la Terre in Paris, her artwork then became known all over the world.

"I am delighted and appreciate being regarded as a veteran of arts and culture for my country and representing my province." said Dr. Esther Mahlangu. Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Norah Mahlangu has also heaped praise on the esteemed artist for bagging an Ubuntu Award.

“As a department, we are delighted that one of our favourite daughters of Mpumalanga has once again been recognised for her talent and also her role in promoting and preserving Ndebele culture,” explains the MEC, Norah Mahlangu- Mabena of the DCSR Mpumalanga.

“Gogo Mahlangu is a true symbol of a South African, who has put the country on the map the world over with her work,” added the MEC.

Dr Esther Mahlangu has had many successful collaborations over the years including, Fiat, Rolls Royce, BMW, Albany and many many more, a cultural icon we are truly proud to have as one of our own!
