Situated in a 600-hectare reserve, 40km north of Middelburg, on the N11 towards Loskop Dam, De Voetpadkloof is set in the spectacular rolling Highveld Grasslands and Loskop Mountain bushveld that this region is famously known for.
The seven beautifully and thoughtfully designed hiking trails truly boast as they make the most of this magnificent reserve, be ready for exquisite look out points and views, with spectacular natural features like the splendid waterfall, dams and beautiful bushveld. The trails themselves have been expertly put together, ensuring that they are suitable for all fitness levels and ages, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy, from beginner walkers to the expert hiker. By far the most popular trail is the moderately difficult but absolutely breath-taking Waterfall Loop that guides you on a 4.5km circular route to the reserve’s gorgeous waterfall which, while it might not be the largest in the region, has a unique character and charm that makes it a popular and a lasting favourite amongst those who really know the area. This 2-hour ramble is perfect for the whole family to enjoy, although small children may need to be carried part of the way.
For those seeking a longer walk, the 4-hour 9km Wildebeest Route is a great choice as a route which also passes the waterfall, but combines this with a show-stopping lookout point that will really have you speechless, you will of course need to have a reasonable level of fitness to complete this hike comfortably, but it is certainly worth the effort!
For beginners looking for something a little easier the 5km Ribbok Trail is the perfect hike for you. It too has a spectacular lookout point and is suitable for the whole family or people who have not completed many hikes and are not ready for the longer moderate trails.
The reserve has two more moderate trails, the 4km Duiker Route that takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and the much longer 8km Koedoe Trail that takes around 3 and a half hours to complete and although it is quite a walk, it is most definitely worth it for bird enthusiasts, so keep your eyes peeled on this one!
Finally, for the adventurous, the 9.5km Klipspringer Route and the short but challenging 1.5km Kuil Trail are a test for even experienced hikers, however, with hot and cold swimming pools waiting back at the camp, magnificent scenery and fabulous wildlife encounters around every corner, these two adventures are more than worth the experience!
A hiker’s paradise with an array of other activities found in the reserve such as Zip-Lining, Putt-Putt, fishing and a brand new water park this is certainly somewhere you need to stay for more than just a day, but day visitors are more than welcome too, so put on those hiking boots, pack your cozzie and head out to De Voetpadkloof, for an adventure you will not soon forget!
