The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has partnered with Harmocept Events to host the second annual Ray Phiri Memorial Lecture to take place on 5 September 2019 at the University of Mpumalanga in Mbombela.
The Ray Phiri Memorial Lecture forms part of a series of events lined up for Tourism Month and is aimed at paying tribute to the late Ray Phiri who received numerous awards in recognition of his contribution in the music industry. Amongst those awards was the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, which was awarded to him by the President of South Africa. Ray Phiri successfully used the arts as an instrument for social transformation.
This year’s memorial lecture will be delivered by the renowned Professor PLO Lumumba from Kenya. Lumumba is a staunch Pan Africanist and has delivered several powerful speeches alluding to African solutions to African problems. Professor Lumumba has served as an Advocate of the High Courts of Kenya and Tanzania as well as Director of Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission.
The memorial lecture is anticipated to be attended by various high profile political leaders in the country, the province as well as from our neighbouring country, Mozambique. Artists, business leaders, community leaders and students are amongst others that will attend the lecture.
The late Ray Phiri made South Africa and Mpumalanga proud and placed the country’s music on the world’s top recordings. During this tenure, he gave back to this country so that generations to come can remember his legacy. Together with his band Stimela, they inspired many artists to play their part in the South African struggle against the oppressive government. He passed away at the age of 70 in July 2017 after a short illness.
