Sterkspruit Nature Reserve

The 1 600 hectare Sterkspruit Nature Reserve incorporates the catchment of the rapidly flowing Sterkspruit River which rises at an altitude of over 2 000 metres. Situated just ten kilometers to the south-east of Lydenburg, adjacent to the Long Tom Pass, this escarpment reserve incorporates highveld grassland, forested kloofs, wooded stream banks, and quartzite cliffs within its boundaries. The crips mountain air and broad vistas are a major attraction for fly fishermen, hikers and nature enthusiasts. Areas adjacent to the reserve offer excellent fly-fishing opportunities.

Interesting mammals include Porcupine, Aardwolf, Cape Clawless Otter, Serval and Oribi. Among the nearly 150 recorded bird species are Ground Woodpecker, Blackwinged Plover, Bush Blaackcap and Cape Rock Thrush.

The Sterspruit River is stocked with introduced Rainbow Trout and the De Kuilen Trout Hatchery - currently leased to a private operator - is situated within the reserve's boundaries.
