Mkhombo Nature Reserve
This 11 000 hectare conservation area is unique among Mpumalanga nature reserves in that it
encompasses a portion of Kalahari thornveld. Situated less than a one hour drive north-east of Pretoria,
Mkhombo surround a large dam which shares the same name.
A variety of large mammals, including Blue Wildebeest and Waterbuck have been reintroduced,
with Steenbok, Warthog and Blackbacked Jackal occurring naturally. Colonies of kangaroo-like Springhare,
are well as diminutive Gerbils excavate burrows in sand areas.
Bird species present include those typical of dry thornbush such as Scalyfeathered Finch, Lilacbreasted Roller,
Whitebrowed Sparrow-weaver and Paradise Whydah. Conspicuous raptors include Blackbreasted Snake, Gabar Goshawk
and Blackshouldered Kite which prey upon reptiles, small birds and rodents.
A number of fish species occur in the dam with Barbel, Vlei Kurper and Carp among the most popular catches.
