uBhetyan-o-Africa – Where Animals Get a Second Chance

20 June 2016 by Katy La Grange

Thirty minutes’ drive from Middelburg, just off the N11 on the way to Loskop Dam is uBhetyan Game Lodge.

Set in the beautiful rolling grasslands of the Cultural Heartlands, the uBhetyan experience is quintessentially Highveld. Even to the design of the lodge that compliments its surrounds, by imitating the sandstone boulders that are iconic of this region.

The picture perfect setting and remote location make it a haven for anyone looking to escape the city for a weekend. As you can truly ‘lose’ yourself in nature, enjoy long hikes and fresh air or simply sit back and unwind.

However the real draw card is your neighbours, because as well as boasting all the facilities you would expect of a game lodge, uBhetyan also functions as a Carnivore Sanctuary with some amazing long term guests.

Hyena, tamarin monkeys, meerkats, ground squirrels, wild dogs, tortoises, bat eared foxes and caracal all call uBhetyan home. Rescued from dire situations, many of these animals will never be able to return to the wild, but are offered a second chance at the Sanctuary.

While the inquisitive meerkats are charming and the tiny tamarin monkeys with their unusual features and fearless natures are mesmerising, Tokisie the striped hyena stole the show. Abandoned as a pup and raised by hand she exhibits none of the usual shy and elusive characteristics of a striped hyena, allowing visitors a rare close up glimpse of this mysterious member of the hyena family.

Sunday visitors are treated to the extra special opportunity of witnessing feeding time which can be a boisterous affair and certainly worth the trip! With a great swimming pool, fitted with its own slide, a lovely restaurant and bar as well as the 4x4 opportunities, uBhetyan provides an excellent day away for the whole family to enjoy.

With amazing rates of R50 per person for day visitors, there is no reason not to meet the inhabitants of this incredible Lodge and learn more about their fascinating and sometimes sad back stories.

However, if you don’t have the time to go to uBhetyan but still want the wildlife experience there’s good news.

In 2016 the owners of uBhetyan will be taking over the Amora Bird Park in the centre of Middelburg (GPS Coordinates: -25.766572, 29.449294). Where they will be showcasing a selection of the wildlife found at uBhetyan alongside the more domesticated animals currently there.

Already a great place to take your kids, the new inclusions to Amora Bird Park will only add to its appeal. A little oasis in the centre of Town, Amora is the perfect location to slip away for a quite lunch or introduce your youngsters to a range of interesting animals.

uBhetyan and Amora offer wildlife interactions that the whole family will enjoy at prices that won’t break the bank. The perfect lunch out or day away, which ever you choose you won’t be disappointed.
