Along with the Ndebele Culture and the rolling Highveld grasslands, Dams are a key feature of the Cultural Heartlands and one of its major tourist attractions. Built initially to provide water for irrigation, Pienaardam like many in the area has been transformed into a recreational mecca. Drawing people from far and wide, especially around the holiday season.
The ideal weekend retreat, Pienaardam’s success revolves around its ability to provide fun for all the family. A superb fishing spot, especially for bass fishermen, you need to arrive early to secure a prime position along the bank of the dam! Donkey carts and pony rides, allow children to explore the veld, while the mini train track, paddle boats, go-karts, four swimming pools and mini-quads will keep them entertained for hours.
Game drive through the reserve and you will find iconic Highveld antelope grazing beside some less familiar characters including a pair of camels with quite an attitude! Yet the real stars of the reserve are Nokka, Ace and Curve, three beautiful lions who steal everyone’s hearts. Born in captivity, these three are now enjoying the life of luxury in their three hectare enclosure.
There is something in addition to the attractions that sets Pienaardam apart and that is its special ambience. Despite being only a short drive from the busy N4 highway connecting Gauteng with the Lowveld, there is a tranquillity that surrounds Pienaardam that gives the impression you are miles from the hub-bub of modern life. It is also a twitcher’s paradise with many classic Highveld bird species to be seen both around the dam and in the veld.
With ample accommodation to choose from, at Pienaardam there is something to suit every taste. While the eight venue halls accommodate everything from intimate 10 guest wedding parties to conferences exceeding 1000 delegates.
It is however the wooden Wedding Chapel that is perhaps the jewel in Pienaardam’s crown. Set against the dam and surrounded by trees in a small glen the chapel looks like it comes straight from the pages of a fairy tale. While surrounds provide the ideal mix of beautiful backdrops for the wedding photos. There is also an outside arch on the banks of the dam for those looking for an outdoor ceremony.
Home to the Hartland Agrishow in September, a variety of horse riding events and the much anticipated annual wedding fare, Pienaardam is a multifaceted venue that makes the most of its accessible central location and the beauty of its surroundings. So for business or pleasure Pienaar Dam is a fantastic destination.
What’s more at only R80 for a day visitor, which includes 3 activities (Game Drive, Paddle Boats, Mini Quad, Mini Train, Horse Cart Rides, Mini Go-cart), Pienaardam really is a great value day out.
